Ultrafiltration pushes water through a membrane with pores fine enough to hold back suspended solids, colloids, turbidity, bacteria and most viruses, while dissolved salts pass through. It is a physical barrier, so it needs no chemical dosing to achieve clarification and disinfection-grade filtration.
UF removes particles, turbidity and micro-organisms but does not reduce TDS - the dissolved salts pass straight through. RO uses a much tighter membrane and does remove dissolved salts, but it needs higher pressure and produces a reject stream. If your problem is turbidity or bacteria, UF is enough; if it is hardness or TDS, you need RO.
Yes, and it is one of the most common uses. UF as RO pre-treatment delivers consistently low-SDI feed water, which protects the RO membranes from fouling, extends their life and stabilises RO performance - especially on surface water, treated sewage or any variable feed.
