A sea water desalination plant converts sea water or brackish water into usable fresh water. The most widely used method is sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO), where high pressure forces water through a membrane that rejects the dissolved salts, producing potable or process-grade water and a concentrated brine stream.
Sea water carries a very high dissolved salt load, so it must be pressurised well above its osmotic pressure to push water through the RO membrane. Purified permeate passes through, while the salts stay behind in the reject. Because of the pressures involved, SWRO uses membranes, pumps and materials built specifically for sea water duty.
Pre-treatment is what decides whether a SWRO plant survives. Sea water carries silt, algae, organics and biological growth, so the train typically includes screening, coagulation, media or ultrafiltration, and cartridge filtration to deliver low-SDI feed. Inadequate pre-treatment is the most common cause of premature membrane failure.
It is the most energy-intensive form of water treatment because of the pressures required. Modern plants offset a large part of this with energy recovery devices, which transfer pressure from the reject stream back into the incoming feed, along with high-efficiency pumps and correct recovery-rate design.
The rejected brine is more saline than the source water and must be disposed of under the applicable environmental consent - normally through a properly engineered outfall with adequate dilution, or by further concentration where discharge is not permitted. Brine management is designed into the plant from the start, not added later.
